COPPER MOUNTAIN, CO — Ka-ching, baby! That was the sound Hendrick Lampert heard after he nailed a huge switch 900 on his second run in the Alt Games slopestyle ski championships.
You see, the junior at CU-Boulder had just dropped major cash for plane tickets to Sunday River, Maine, (for Simon Dumont’s inaugural Pro Am slopestyle event) and Whistler, BC (for the World Ski & Snowboard Festival), so he had good reason to throw down on his second run.
After a modest first run score of 67.3 for his 540 to switch unnatural 720 to switch 540, Lampert stepped up his game by throwing a cork 900/switch unnatural 720/switch 900 combination on his second run. That earned him the collegiate national title and a cool $600.
“That pays for my plane tickets, so I’m totally psyched about that,” Lampert says. “My score was kind of low for the first run and I knew a lot of other guys were doing a lot more spinning, so I changed this up a bit for my second run.
The most consistent skier of the day was CU-Boulder’s Matt Walker, who ripped off scores of 95.5 and 96.5 with unmatched technical proficiency on his cork 9s. Meanwhile, Brian Locke, also from CU-Boulder, upped his switch cork 720 on his first run to a switch cork 900 on his second run, while also nailing a 270 off the down box to pin down third place and secure a sweep for the Buffs.
Last year’s slopestyle ski champion Willis Brown of CU-Boulder was second with a 90.5 after the first run, but a crash kept him from repeating his title and he had to instead settle for fourth.
Big props go out to Western State freshman Ryan Pendleton, who went Superman to cork 7 tail grab to double back flip on both of his runs. Even though he wound up only fifth on the day, his double back flips drew some of the biggest oohs and ahhhs from the crowd.
“I’ve been throwing it a lot this year but I was a little nervous throwing it off that jump, and I had wrecked real bad before I came out here,” he said. “I just went for it and I was stompin’ it, so I’m stoked about that.”
The Alt Games continue April 17-19 in Southern California with beach volleyball, flowboarding, wakeboarding and competitive eating. The Alt Games will be broadcast on CBS Sports in a one-hour highlight show at 2 p.m. ET May 16. — BRIAN METZLER
