Posted at 11:47:09 AMNippon Open is the largest snowboarding event in Japan and also one of the world’s pinnacle events. It has a 14 year history and has always lead the snowboarding scene in Japan. Only one rider can become the Nippon Open champion and must beat out over 200 amateur and professional riders. With this glory comes over $20,000 in prize money to each of the male and female champions. The world’s top snowboarders will gather at Fukushima, ALTS Bandai from February 26th ~ 2nd , March 2008.
This event has a reputation for attracting the most spectators in Japan and bringing out the fun and excitement of competitive snowboarding. On site spectators and at home viewers alike will see the very best that snowboarding has to offer at the Nippon Open. In the halfpipe, riders speed up the 5m walls and pull tricks that are almost superhuman … Halfpipe requires most technical skills in snowboarding and whoever can best show this will become the champion. Looking back at past Nippon Open champions, you can see all of the different eras in the snowboarding scene represented from Jimi Scott, known to be the pipe artisanal; two time champion Terje Haakonsen; Gian Simmen and Satu Jarvela became champions two years in a row; first Japanese champion Rio Tahara; first kid rider ever to be on the podium was Shaun White; and Kazuhiro Kokubo became the youngest champion in Nippon Open history. The Nippon Open is an event where riders from around the world can try to fulfill their goal of being the best in the world, while competing again rider that are the best in the world.
Nippon Open is part of the Burton global open series (BGOS) along with the New Zealand, Australian, Canadian, European and USOpens, all of which provide riders with points from each discipline at each event according to their ranking. All riders from amateur to pros participating in the BGOS will collect points and the male and female rider with the greatest number of points at the end of the series will each be awarded $100,000 each and will be crowned as the Global Open Series Champion.
