BMX flatlander, Chad Degroot is answering the Who? What? Where? Why? and How? from the GO211 community as he juggles his positions as product developer and team manager for "UPG" clothing, part owner of Mesh Skatepark and event organizer of the annual Halloween BMX blow out knows as Baco-A-Go-Go and, did we mention his has a baby? GO211's Chad Degroot might possibly be the busiest man in BMX, which coincidentally makes him the perfect man to ask anything and everything you ever needed to know about BMX, babies, coffee, growing beards and standing the test of time in a sport that is known for breaking people off. Fire away he's all yours..... |

Hey Chad. You seem like a real busy guy, now that your a big pro rider do you have someone do all the work on your bike or can you still turn a wrench? Its good to see a pro who doesn't mind doing the dirty work too. from: ScottI would never let anyone fix my bike, well, unless i am watching...its weird. My dad taught me most everything, then I just picked up as it went wrong. Trust me, i have messed some things up bad trying to figure them out, but now i am dialed. |
|
do you feel like you progressed the sport since you started riding. from: Alexi MacouYes I do. Not to be big headed, but I was there for a transition and while new moves and options were being done. Rider owned companies started, flatland was taking off and going places, and I had many options. I would like to think that I am still progressing the sport. Helping keep a scene alive when the skate park business is unheard of now (privately own), still doing demos, and taking my style and moving it to street and park. There are a lot of riders that look alike and do the same things. Keeping it progressing is my plan for as long as I can. |

Who is the most influential person in BMX? from: Kelly ClarkThat is a tuff question. There are some guys that i really like what they do and it inspires me. Guys like Brian Kachinsky. He gets the job done, travels a ton, and is on top of it all. Mark Mulville is a little guy but he seems so care free and adapts to everything. Then there is Dave Freimuth, he always seems like he is on vacation, then he rides and learns new shit every time i see him. Kevin Porter recently influenced me. He seemed to fall off, then he gets back on that horse and gets it done. To narrow it down to one person is pretty tough. |

the info on you says your busy. what do you like to do in spare time when you get it?? from: Derek Harlfinger #800Spare time involves surfing and brewing beer. Otherwise it would be taking photos, everything is a photo. |

Hey Chad, Did you ever ride with Kevin, Eaton, Jamie, Etc....you know the Plywood Hood guys from the "Dorkin' in York" days. They are legends! from: Buster HaltermanI have only been to one York Jam, but we all did ride together that day. Kevin and me use to do some Gravity Games demos each year, so it was sweet being able to ride with the King. Mark Eaton took on the filming thing years ago, so we were able to work together on a Haro video that came out a long time ago. I actually was in the car with Mark one time when he told me to grab the wheel, he jumped out, ran around the car and back in. He told me he wanted to do that for long time. Way before ghost riding your whip was cool. You got that right, they are LEGENDS...thanks for the good question. |

being your old lady, i know your secret to facial hair farming, but how do you get your brown-eye smooth as silk.....? is nair involved in the process? i mean, seriously, there is no peanut butter in your shag carpeting and your musket shots are whistling dixie tunes. i'm guessing that you have mastered the balance of hair on top and none under the moon for performance enhancement...? from: mrs. degrootYou are dead-on with everything. Keep it smooth and don't let carpet get in the way. Take care of yourself and tune-up every once in awhile. Its like changing the oil on your car, it will make you detailed and upgraded. |

what does it take to become a great bmxer. and is there like a top quality that you need to have to become a bmxer? from: sk8er chic83It takes a lot of time and patience. Using your mind and getting a little creative isn't a bad start as well. Otherwise just have a good time at what you try, do it for yourself. |
|
what's your favorite feature at your park? from: Cold WaterProbably the two sides of the park, skate and bike. They are separate and very different. The skate side is really small, but has some sweet wedges and a good rail. The bike side is fast, hips everywhere, wall rides, and more than enough spines. I would have to say that the camel hump is my favorite by far. Step up and step down all day long. |
|
How long have your sported a real life mustache and what is your favorite type of mustache? from: Loreo316I was born with one so I know no different. Favorite would be the freestyle version with metal supports and razor wire. |

Chad,
I was just wondering where are you going to be getting loose at when it comes time for Interbike? Actually you might want to keep that one under wraps and be like a ninja around Vegas. We will keep it simple as to what is your favorite riding spot? And do you think that BMX in the Olympics helped out the racing side of BMX? from: DingerThere is no slack area of Vegas, its all loose. But i can tell you the first day i get there I am jumping out of a plane near the strip, not sure where i am gonna land. Might as well start Interbike right.
Favorite riding spot could be in this order, can't pick just one. 1st Mesh Skatepark 2nd Tulsa Oklahoma 3rd anywhere in Wisconsin
BMX in the Olympics is as rad as it gets. Congrats to them all and Mike Day especially. My only complaint would be the coverage was very short and minimal. Slow down guys and milk that TV time. |
|
Do you consider BMX a sport or an art form ? from: PLG'S PROFILEIts both. I respect it with some organization, yet no one can really tell you what to do. A sport has some kind of athletics involved, except bowling. But its way above a sport and a better word is art form. Look at flatland, most flatlanders are crazy in one way or another. Coming up with ways to move a bike without anything except your human extensions for over 30 years. Ramps and street are another whole part of the art. The looks on peoples faces when they see what we do for the first time is priceless. |

What kind of mustache contest did you have with Jay Miron? Was there really a written contract? from: Jay EgglestonWe both were fresh on Schwinn at the time. We were messing around all the time. One night i wrote a contract for Jay if he grew a mustache. It was detailed, like if he has TV time and mentions the mustache i will pay him x amount. Or if he gets a pic in a mag with the stache showing i will give him a porn mag. There were different levels and money and mags and other stuff involved. I was serious. So one morning Jay calls the head guy at Schwinn and tells him he has another offer and wants to fax the contract over. The office and the high-ups started stressing bad. They thought they were gonna loose Jay. He sent over the El Mustache De La Contracto. They were crying laughing and were very happy not to loose Jay...ask Jay his version, i am leaving out some details. But thats it in a nut shell. Nut shells are small huh? |
