38. Hi Holly, have you ever been wakesurfing? If not you should try it! If so, do you think it helps your surfing? from: tommy czeschinI have been wakesurfing actually. I went one time with my friend Mary Osborne and absolutely loved it! I dont know if it necessarily helps your surfing, but it was super fun! |

37. favorite spot to surf in mexico? from: Mike LosnessNexpa! Land of amazing lefts. |

36. who is your favorite female surfer and male surfer in the world? from: Mike Losnessit's tough for me to answer that question. I definitely dont have one solid favorite. When I was learning to surf, I worshiped Lisa Andersen and Rob Machado, Kalani Robb, and the Hobgoods. Having met all those people and spent a little time with them, it changes the way I see them. I still love to watch them all surf but I wouldn't call them favorites. My favorite female surfer is probably Kim Mayer. She's one of my favorite people in the world, always positive, smiling, and stoked on whatever is going on. She also happens to ride a surfboard really well. My favorite male surfer would have to be either Cheyne Magnussen or Mike Losness. I love surfing with them because they both rip super hard, but they are really nice guys who encourage me, and have even given me good waves, something that's rare for male surfers. I've had epic sessions with both of them! |

35. On your choice of surfboard tail configurations, what's your preferred tail shape on your everyday board and why? Squashtail, rounded pin, pin or swallow tail? Lastly, what are your thoughts of non-pro surfers from wave-starved locales posting surf pictures and posser pictures of themselves on the web to exhibit the progression of their kookness for the world to see? Thanks and Keep Surfing! from: Mario RutaI usually ride a squash tail for my standard shortboards. If the waves are a little bigger or hollower, i'll pull out my round tail, but i'm not really a big fan of swallows.
I think anyone should be able to post photos of themselves surfing on the web. |

33. If you never became a pro surfer-any idea what you would have chose for a career? from: DanHi Dan,
Let's say if i never became a pro athlete.... I think I might have been a lawyer. My Dad is a lawyer and I love to read, analyze situations, and come up with arguments for and against a certain case. I think I would have been really good at it. I'm sure my Dad would be devastated to hear that that's actually what I would have done had I not gone down the pro surfing path. He keeps asking me when i'm going to grow up, and my answer is NEVER! |

32. You hear all the time about athletes feeling the urge to make a comeback after retiring from competing. Do you have that urge? How do you fight it off? from: DanI do sometimes have that urge. Whenever I watch a womens event I think to myself "I could beat these girls!" I feel like I never really gave competitive surfing 110% and if you aren't going to give 110%, you can't beat the girls that are. I fight off the urge by remembering that i'm still not prepared to give it all my energy, and go surfing for fun and realize how much better it is, and next thing I know, the urge has totally disappeared. |

29. There is 3 surfers going for the same wave. The first is a really good surfer but always sits too deep and does not stand a chance to make it. The second is a fairly beginner surfer but is sitting in the right spot and drops in on the first guy even though he did not stand a chance to make the wave. The third surfer, your average surfer that surfs 3 days a week with no talent or balls, starts to go and pulls back causing the wave to crumble and close out on the second guy. Second guy would have made the section, but no chance after the third crumbled the section.
Which of the surfers has the worst surf ethics?
Which one frustrates you the most? from: Andy Finchwow, Andy. INCREDIBLE question. definitely a thought provoker. hmmm......
Each surfer is frustrating in their own way regardless of skill level. The guy that takes off too deep is annoying because you feel like you can't burn him, but you know he's going to waste the wave, so you have to go. The guy that crumbles the section is super annoying because that kills the wave too. As a good surfer I might be sitting deep and have the "beginner" look back and see a girl, and take off thinking I won't make it when really I might, but if we take your situation and assume that the guy is WAAAAY too deep to make it, then I would have to side with the surfer taking off in the middle.
You can't blame the beginner for wanting to go on the wave, at least they pulled out, and sometimes a little bit of crumble gives you a great spot to hit the lip and throw your fins in their face. You do that once, and they won't paddle for the next one that you're on!
So... did I answer that? Maybe not. Good conundrum. You win! |

28. I see in some of your pics that your swimming with turtles, hell ya. How often do you swim with them? from: Chad DeGroothi chad, i dont get to swim with turtles nearly enough. they are so cool to watch underwater. I got to feed one in tahiti and then he followed me around looking for more snacks. I'll be honest though and say I prefer to swim with critters that could be dangerous. i love the adrenaline rush of swimming with sharks and sting rays. i want to feel like danger is a real possibility. |
|
27. what is your favorite thing about scuba diving? from: Mike Losnesshey Mike, thanks for the question. my favorite thing is the silence. you can't to anyone and no one can talk to you. it's all about relaxing and the slow motion feeling of checking things out. If the water is warm and clear and there are big sharks around, even better! When are we doing a trip. Drop Zone 2?! What! |
|
26. ware did you ride yourr firstwaveee? from: Shane StanwoodI guess my first wave was at Waikiki on a rented 12' longboard. My family took a trip there Spring Break of my freshman year of high school. I rented one of those boards and took off on a 1ft whitewash and rode it forever. I was hooked! |
|
25. What was your first surf board? from: max pechonisMy first board was a 1970s 7'0" super thick twin fin that belonged to my uncle. I found it in my grandparents garage but it took me about a year to convince my mom to let me bring it home. It was heavy and awkward and to this day I still can't ride it. I saved up babysitting money and scored a sweet 5'10" 80s T&C quad from a garage sale for $25 and had a lot more luck learning on that. I still have it but it has a couple broken fins that I really need to fix so that I can ride it again! |
|
24. What's a good pick up line that you use? from: donutA good pick up line? I don't really need those. I actually wear a silver ring on the ring finger of each hand to deflect attention. The one on my left hand looks a lot like a wedding band. Of course everyone is flattered by attention from members of the opposite sex, but as a girl in a sport mostly populated by guys, I get more than enough unsolicited attention. Plus, pick up lines are cheesy! They are a turn off for me. I just like a good smile and eye contact. You can feel someone's energy and if you are vibrating at the same frequency, an unspoken connection is much more powerful than some silly line. |
|
23. Hey Holly! What a cool name you have. My name is Holly too! My parents name me Holly because I was born around christmas. Was there any special reason your parents named you Holly? from: donutHey Holly!!! ; )
I'm not really sure why they named be Holly. But after they started with one "H" name, they had to keep going. I'm the oldest of 5 girls and all our names start with H. There's Heidi, Hannah, Helina, and Hayla. I named Hayla. They were out of H names that they liked so I came up with that one. |
|
22. what's your favorite trick on a short board? from: donutI like to get barreled. I'm not sure getting barreled really counts as a trick, but that's my favorite thing to do in surfing. |
|
21. Have you ever been to Nebraska? from: donutNebraska? not yet. My Dad is from Kansas though so i've been there quite a few times. close enough? |
|
20. Hey Holly, have you ever thought or may be already surfed the north african coast? atlantic side ? well im taking about Morocco, it's a great place to be and to surf ;) from: LamiaI haven't been there yet but have definitely thought about it. My boyfriend is a regular foot and really wants to check out all those right points in Morocco. I'd love to see the place and experience the culture. Maybe one day.... |
|
19. do you like long boards or short better? from: SpencerI ride my short board a lot more often than my longboard, but really it depends on the conditions. I think a good surfer should be able to ride all types of equipment so I try to choose the best board for the conditions. Riding a longboard makes a head high wave scary sometimes and it just gives you a whole new skill set to master. I like both! |
