Our recent trip to Jackson Hole was definitely one to remember. One of the reasons why this trip was so memorable is simply because of the mountain itself. Jackson Hole, Wyoming is unlike any other place I have ever ridden. Just outside of the mountain’s boundaries, lies terrain that most would only dream of being accessible by a helicopter. Cliff bands, wind lips, and untouched, bottomless snow spread for miles. The terrain is endless, and would take a lifetime to explore it all.
Having Bryan Iguchi as our tour guide, and mentor on this trip made it priceless. Just meeting the man was an experience, but riding with him, in his mountains that he knows like the back of his hands, was on a whole other level. I think Ross, Trevor, and I were all inspired every time we saw him launch off a cliff, drop into a line, or give us a free lesson on the one of the greatest method grabs in snowboarding history. He is a legend, and one of the kindest, most humble people I’ve ever met. He snowboards for the love of it, and he is definitely somebody that more snowboarders should admire if we want to take our sport in the right direction.
Even though our trip was only for days long, I learned so many lessons that will help me throughout my entire snowboarding career. Snowmobiling for example: Sleds are crucial in the backcountry, and I was probably one of the sketchiest, most out of control people to ever step foot onto one before this trip. But by the fourth day, I was comfortable following Bryan up almost any terrain to get to out next shred spot.
We also learned about avalanche safety, which is pretty important in the backcountry if you care about your life whatsoever. We did drills with our beacons, and learned about what types of snow pack is safe, and not safe to ride.
Building jumps, and setting up features in order to get a shot is serious work. Doing this really made me appreciate anyone who has ever put together a solid video part, or gotten a really dope photo in a magazine.
This trip was so much different, and such a good change from our usual contest trip. It was real, fun shredding. Definitely a solid preview of the type snowboarding that I think Ross, Trevor, and myself would like to do a lot more of in the future. I will never forget this trip, and cannot wait to do something similar very soon.
I wish I had some photos to show you all, but we were just too busy shredding!
