BMX - A Very Vert UpdatePosted at 01:26:46 PM
OK, here’s a little Dew Tour update for ya. So the Big Story last night was the first Final of the weekend – BMX Vert. All the big names were here, throwin’ down huge tricks, and we got to see some new ones, too. Youngin’ Zack Warden came out swingin’ to show the old guys of Vert what the New School has to offer. Got to see a lot of guys eat ramp, too. DMC took the hardest hit, he got locked up on a barspin and went down hard. After a few scary moments, he was carted off on a stretcher, we’ll try to get an update on that ASAP. Everyone knew that Jamie Bestwick had the overall title on lock, barring disaster. Well, funny how disaster seems to find it’s way into life, huh? On his first run, Bestwick dropped into the pipe and as he was going up the first wall, a major mechanical malfunction sent Jamie 4 feet out and, upon re-entry, his body landed disaster (the new operative word) on the coping and Jamie plummeted to flat. Ouch. Turns out his crank arm snapped in half at probably the most inopportune moment you could imagine. Here’s where the drama began. Normally, time doesn’t start until you complete your first trick, and Jamie just dropped in and crashed. He wanted a re-run. After several minutes of deliberation, the judges voted against Jamie and he got a big ‘ole donut for the first run. No pressure, Jamie. So a small, minute crack of hope opened up for Steve McCann and Simon Tabron, both sitting right behind Jamie in points. Meanwhile, Chad Kagy rocked his second run which put him on the top of the podium (eclipsing a forgettable, ass-sliding first run) with McCann, Tabron, and Bestwick still to go. McCann rocked his second run as well, uncorking a ton of new tricks, but it wasn’t enough to unseat Kagy. Tabron was up next, then he crashed hard. Simon's weekend was over in an instant. That left Kagy at the top with McCann right behind, both assured of podium spots for the event. Sooooooo, the question was, how would the crash affect Jamie, both mentally and physically? There was a mad scramble in between runs to change his broken cranks out to new, borrowed ones that were 2 centimeters longer. Would that affect him too? Well, the savvy guy he is, Jamie knew he needed a nice, safe run to secure the title and that’s just what he did. Of course, Bestwick’s nice, safe run got him a second place finish, but, hey, a cool $75,000 for the Dew Tour Championship makes that second almost worth it, don’t ya think? Congrats on the 3-peat Jamie and props to Kagy for comin' back strong with his first-ever Dew Tour win!
