Everything started off on March 28 in Desoto, TX for my first ABA National this year. It almost went perfect but I came home with a 2nd place. The next day was the 2008 USA Cycling's BMX National Championships. I was looking to re-peat my performance of 2007, but it was not to be; I came home with the bronze medal this year. From TX, I headed back to the training center in Chula Vista, CA for a few days of prep work before heading to Australia for the supercross race.
The Oz race started out great. For the first time ever, I won the Men's Time-Trial, seeding me #1 going into the important final day of racing. The race day seemed to be going right as planned as my first 4 motos went smoothly, until the semi-final race. They always take top 4 riders to the final out of the semi and I was sitting a comfortable third going into the second-to-last turn, when the first place rider slid out and took me with him. It's tough to have your day end like this, but more reason to be out in front I guess.
From Australia I flew straight to Chicago for the very important Olympic Media Summit. What an awesome experience! Here's just a few of the great things that happened. I went to the Hershey's store in Chicago and met with the wonderful people making my partnership possible. We talked over some of the initiatives that are being put in place, which include my association with the Hershey's Taste Of Victory promotion. Don't worry you will be hearing and seeing much more about it. Keep your eyes peeled for the US Olympic Wristband Set and of course, all the specially marked red, white and blue packages of Hershey product for your chance to win prizes. Oh and before I forget...also keep a lookout for the Kellogg's "Gripz Summer of Fun" promotion that will be hitting stores soon. Again, you might find my face smilin' at you more. More details coming...
From the Hershey's store I headed to NikeTown! Our brother Curtis from Nike did a few of us athletes a huge solid and allowed us to grab way too much product. I got a Nike Cubs shirt while I was there. Why you ask? Because after NikeTown I went to Wrigley field and threw the first pitch out at the Cubs v. Reds game! Yes, I'm serious. Don't ask me why they picked me but it was a huge honor. Thanks to all that made that happen. And to answer your question, I threw major heat and I'm now signed to a 5-week deal with the Cubs. More pics to come. After the game, Curtis bought a few athletes the expensive Fogo de Chau dinner. He bought dinner and a couple motorcycles that night I guess. He's rollin' in dough, haha.
The following day at the media summit was hectic. Interviews with Biff Henderson from The Late Show, NBC, CNN, Bravo/Oxygen, Washington Post, photo shoots, green screens...you name it, we did it, and I loved it. This summit was the best chance yet for us BMX Racers to really help the public see what our sport and our personalities are all about- I think we succeeded.
Coming up this next week I head out again for Virginia, New York, San Diego and Denmark. Pretty sure it's this next Wednesday April 30th, so watch the Today Show because I'll be on it with a few others!
