So I, as most of you, start your recent days off with reading about what BMXer Randy Stumpfhauser has going on. Many a time, his blogs make my day. Well, today, Randal, this blogs for you.
I am 1K now. What is 1K you ask? It is a reward level you can attain on United. 25,000 miles is Premier. 50,000 is Premier Executive and 100,000 miles is called 1K. I've never flown more than 60,000 miles in a year but being as this was the crazy Olympic year, I had 96,166 miles as of last Saturday. No way I was going to let this 1K status pass me by. So what did I do? I spent $563 and flew around the country. On Sunday I went down to Chula Vista, CA and learned some Olympic weight lifting techniques and did a little clinic at the local track with a few kids. On Monday while down in Chula I attended the US Anti Doping meeting. Here, they let us know about new rules for next year. Yes, Randy, it is a ball-up. Pretty much all athletes in the testing pool will need to be available for a 1 hour time slot every single day of the year. Which means if you want to be tested between 6-7am because you know you'll be sleeping- then that's your time. But what if you have a flight at 4am? That means you'll have to update that day and pick a new location where they can test you for that day. Forget to update and they come to your house at 6am? Missed test and 3 of those in any revolving 18 month period and you can kiss your career goodbye. What if you are flying to China and you aren't available? Missed test and you'll have to appeal saying you couldn't be tested because you were on an airplane. If the old rules weren't stupid enough, these new rules really take the cake. I'm all for drug testing but these new rules will ensure many many many 'clean' athletes will have their careers stripped away because of how hard these new rules will be to follow. Athletes that have never even taken a supplement in their lives will be accused of doping because they missed their tests. Yay.
So on to Tuesday where I needed still 3,500 miles to get 1K. Left San Diego at 7am. I flew to San Francisco (where I could have drove an hour from there and been home), but no, I waited there for two hours and then flew to Dallas (which was one of the scariest flights I've had this year). Got to Dallas at 4:45pm and met up with a friend from at&t and we went to grab a bite. Came back to the airport for a 7:30pm flight to Denver. Waited in Denver for 15 minutes then flew to Oakland, CA. Got my bags and got home at 1am. 7am-12am. Full day of flying and I am happy to say I have 100,133 miles. Not a bad trip for $563 eh?
