Day 2 in NZPosted at 01:30:00 PM
Although the weather forecast was dodgy at best, it actually turned out to be a pretty nice day here at Snow Park NZ. The men took to the pipe early under windy and gray skies but were raring to go. The action saw two heats with the top seven men advancing from each, in addition to the top five scores thereafter, which whittled the field of 51 men to sixteen by day’s end. In heat one it was Brennen Swanson who took the top spot with the highest score of the day with a run that started off with a big method air, followed by a front 9 nose grab, into a backside 5, followed by back to back 7’s and finishing off with frontside rodeo 5. Heat two saw Aussie Mitch Allan boosting out of the pipe with a run that began with a method air, followed by a front 9 melon, into a backside 5, back to back 7’s, Haakon 7 melon, and finishing with a stylie stalefish. Of the top nine women’s riders advancing on to Saturday’s semi-finals, six were Japanese and three were Chinese. Jiayu Liu was straight boosting, starting her run off with a huge frontside air, followed by an equally massive backside air into a front 5, followed by a back 5 mute, front 3 indy and finishing off with a Cab 3 melon. Jason Grossi, head judge for the Burton Global Open Series had this to say, “The Chinese riders were killing it. We really haven’t seen them yet at this level and they came out and were ruling it. The women took the top one, two and four spots and even the men were really pushing it. It’s going to be a really unique competition because we haven’t seen these guys at all. The overall level of riding was pretty good but I definitely think the highlight so far was the Chinese kids. Jiayu Liu was going huge. She had good clean spins and her amplitude was great, she pretty much killed it. There was no one else even close to her – that was pretty cool.” Halfpipe Qualifications Women- Results 1 Jiayu Liu CHN --- 2 Zhifeng Sun CHN --- 3 Mizuki Naho JPN ROSSIGNOL 4 Xu Chen CHN --- 5 Mayu Ishibashi JPN YONEX 6 Ryoko Iijima JPN MOSS 7 Shiho Nakashima JPN ADIDAS 8 Asuko Miyake JPN GRAY 9 Rie Yoshizawa JPN MOSS 10 Paula Mitchell NZE NITRO 11 Charmaine Ironside CAN BURTON 12 Lesley McKenna GBR ROXY 13 Faye Gulini USA OAKLEY 14 Andrea Schuler SUI FLOW
