Crankworx 2008...one day left! (Sat, 16 Aug 2008 Posted at 01:30:00 PM)
With Day Seven in the bag and the biggest event yet to take place tomorrow. live via webcast for your eyes to see, there is still a ton to talk about! I try to keep this recap brief so you can spend timing watch and not reading, cause who reads these days…..right?
The weather has been a mix bag this past week with rain and cooler than normal temps taking over during the first few days which included the Dual Slalom and Garbanzo HD. Since then Mother Nature has jumped back on our side with sunny, hot weather. The past few days have been host to the Jim Beam Air DH, WomenzWorx, VW Trick Showdown and the "Giant" Slalom.
Two new additions to this years festival are the VW Trick Showdown and the "Giant" Slalom, both events have been nothing but mind-blowing! The Whistler Mountain Bike Park has been the backdrop to some of the most insane tricks seen to-date, including Greg Watt's slaying the sickest Step-down Flipwhip in Session Two of the VW Trick Showdown and Casey Groves stomping a Quadruple Pendulum for first place in Session One, earning him an out-of-nowhere invite to the BearClaw invitational, live online by Mr.Berrecloth himself. To say the least, Casey was stoked! Both Watts and Groves walked away with over $3,000 in prize money for their efforts.
The Giant Slalom was epic in its first year. Fan favorite Brian Lopes had a rough day with a couple of crashes leaving him in second place overall in what could be the most exciting and unbelievable event Kokanee Crankworx has ever seen! Greg Minnaar took top spot in the Giant Slalom but only after running back up course to check on Lopes after his crash in the finals, then cruised down to the finish. Talk about sportsmanship, Greg Minnaar is the man!!! One thing I will point out is that Lopes crashed over the start gate in the first round and came back to win that race and go on to take second overall. It's just silly how talented these guys are!
>From the Pro's to the AM's, this year's Kokanee Crankworx has been a crowed pleaser. There have been two live bands everyday on the TELUS MainStage, including Supernatural, Five Alarm Funk, Blue King Brown, Little Sins, the Woodhands, Mother Mother and many more. The integration of live music and action sports really brings an event to the next level in my mind!
The biggest news this year has been the live webcasts on Go211.com and Crankworx.com. So far we have seen the VW Trick Showdown yesterday and the Giant Slalom today.
Next up tomorrow is the most anticipated event of the festival, the Monster Energy Drink Slopestyle with $15,000 going to the winner!! Will Brandon Semenuk keep his momentum rolling from Crankworx Colorado? Watch it live online at Crankworx.com or right here on Go211.com to find out!!
