Monster Energy Slopestyle Delivers! (Sun, 17 Aug 2008 Posted at 05:30:00 AM)
Let me start off by saying today was a scorcher here in the Whistler Valley. The high today reaching 34C, or for anyone south of us 95F.
The biggest, most anticipated event of the festival took place today in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park's famous Boneyard Slopestyle course. With 20,000 plus spectators, the Monster Energy Slopestyle at Kokanee Crankworx (yes that is the full legal name if you ask the sponsors) was unbelievable! I'm not sure what words I would use to describe this year's event, maybe... Boo Yeah? I know that saying has lost it's cache of the years, but the hell with it, it works for me so…BOO YEAH what a night!
The Monster Energy Slopestyle at Kokanee Crankworx was insane, guys like Lacondeguy, Watts, McCaul, Zink, Goldman, McDermott, Semenuk and the rest of the 30 riders took it upon themselves to slay this course and melt the minds of the thousands watching on-hand and via live webcast.
Here is a quick recap of the top four and how Lacondeguy rode away with the $15, 000, that's about 10,000 Euros at today's rate!
Kona team rider Andreu Lacondeguy of Spain took top spot and $15,000 in the finals with a score of 94.3; second place and $8,000 went to Lance Mcdermott of the UK with a score of 91.5; third place went to Whistler’s own Brendan Semenuk, walking away with $4,500 and a score of 89.8. All the riders in the top eight took home some cash for their amazing efforts today.
Andreu’s winning run consisted of a long list of impressive tricks, starting with a Double Back Flip of the first table (never linked in full competition run before), a Foot Plant off the Monster Snake, a Back Flip X-Up, Flat Spin 360, Topside Nac-Nac, Can-Can Step-Down, Superman, and finished off with a Back Flip onto the final Kokanee feature and Superman off into the village.
This was easily the best Slopestyle event ever in my mind!
Now that the Dates for Kokanee Crankworx 2009 are set, August 8-16, I suggest everyone mark it in their calendar now! You will not want to miss the action in '09.
