After spending a solid decade going to the North Shore every winter, some of the excitement wears off. It starts to feel more like home and there are a lot of positive emotions that come with that, but the raw excitement of seeing it for the first time is long gone. Showing up on the North Shore with three 18 year olds who were experiencing it for the first time, brought all that excitement back. I was more fired up to surf, more fired up to go to Haleiwa, and just generally more fired up because of their contagious excitement. I did miss my more mature friends at times, but for all you seasoned pros, if you ever need a reality check, I suggest you spend a week with a handful of groms!
Emily was borrowing one of my boards, got caught inside on a set at Rockies, and broke it. One of her first broken boards. I was proud of her!
