I didnt expect to score amazing waves in Haiti. I did expect to explore a new place, maybe name a few surf spots, but mostly just experience a new interesting culture. But, when our guide picked us up from the airport and informed us that the swell forecast looked very promising with two swells back to back that should keep the surf at least in the head high range for the duration of our stay, I got my hopes up a bit.
After surfing a few sessions at the trashy beach of Jacmel, we loaded up the crew and drove 4 hours through carsickness inducing windy mountain roads to the port town of Les Cayes to head out on a boat to an island off the coast and it's Port Morgan. Port Morgan named after the infamous pirate Capt. Morgan of course. We set off with stories of pirates and sunken treasure.
In the morning our designated boat that was supposed to take us around the island looking for new surf spots was sidelined with technical difficulties, so we were forced to take the only other option which was walking to the other side of the island to look for some place that was protected from the howling wind but still picking up the swell.
After an hour's hot sweaty walk through quaint little villages, past mooing cows, through sticky mud that tried to steal your sandals, etc., we finally came to a cute little left point. It was all of waist high on the set but very picturesque, so the photog ordered us out there to get the shot. Just the 5 of us, probably never been surfed before, we named it turtle head.
Could be worse, right?
