I have a couple of friends who put on an annual contest called the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon to raise money to support the Helen Woodward Animal Center. The last three years they have asked me to help out but I always came up with an excuse. This year I had run out of excuses and finally volunteered to be a guest judge. I had no idea what I was getting myself into and thought it would be pretty boring. I was incredibly wrong
Watching dogs surfing was actually one of the most hilarious things ever. Their owners would put them on the board, push them out the back, wait for the right wave and then push them in. The dogs would stand, or lie down, or sit, facing the beach or surfing backwards, all the way to the inside. There were a few horrendous wipeouts, some interferences and collisions, and a couple impressively long rides.
The winner with a perfect 10 was a little white dog named Buddy. It was a super silly day!
