I began racing BMX back in 1982. I raced for over a year befor I won a race. Once I started winnig, the wins came often. I won the main at the 1984 grand nationals in Gainesville Fla. in what was then the NPSA (National Pedal Sport Association). I raced in the 17 intermediate division. At this race, Billy Madden won his first pro main event. I was amazed at how fast this guy was. I dreamed of racing pro one day. When I returned back from Fla., I learned that our local track in Augusta Ga. had closed down. Not long after that, the NPSA went out of business. My parents NEVER supported my racing. Even though they did not work on weekends, they would not even come watch me race. I almost always had to ride my bike to the track, race, then ride home. This might not sound like a big deal, but it was 8 miles to the track from my house. I quit racing bikes and thought my parents were right and that I should forget about my "pipe dream". So after 22 years, I am back at it. I race in both the NBL and the ABA. I race in the 41 and over novice class. The cool thing is that my 14 year old daughter races as well. Her name is Caitlin and she is fast. She has won state titles, regional titles, and is working on a top 10 national plate this year. My wife is our manager and she likes the sport a lot. I wished BMX would have been an olympic sport back when I was young. Who knows, maybe I would have been the Kyle Bennet of my day.
