“yeah yeah, na mate,” the man at the pie shop explained when I asked if he had any chicken pies left. Yeah yeah naw, what exactly does that mean? When your deep in Tasmania those answer are a common reply
So im here for the first big contest on the WQS. Im in the North Western corner of Tasmania in the shire of Marrawah. Its basically endless farm land and forest with more cows and kangaroos everywhere. The town or lack of consist of one gas station and a Pub. Its coastline is pristine and basically untouched with an endless supply of southern swell smashing straight into the coast. The first day we surfed a super fun little left hander. To get to all the surf spots you pretty much need 4 wheel drive, so when you have a little tin box rental car it comes time to start hiking. Its a good way to work off the nightly meat pies and Tasmania's finest , Boags.
I had a tough go in the comp as they moved the venue to the light house. Its was a mixed up beach break and I was just out of rhythm with the sets. I was pretty bummed out, until the next heat started and I realized I should be pumped to just be out surfing. My good friend Gabe Kling took off on a really nice right hander and started lighting it up. Then on the end of the wave he went for a big tail slide. His back foot kinda slipped off and he fell in the white water. A couple minutes later some yells, “ hey look Gabes laying on the beach.” He looked like a beached whale, and was yelling in agony. We all ran down to help him out and he was just yelling in the shore break. The contest staff ran down and put him on a strutter and started checking out his knee and ankle. You could tell it was bad just by the pain he was in. I guess he flew back to the states later that day, and is going to get an MRI as soon as he gets home. So get well soon Gabe............
I have ben shooting with Damea Dorrsey from Transworlds surf the last couple days. We have been getting some really good stuff so be looking for some shots in one of the upcoming issues.
We leave tomorrow for Western Australia for the Drug Aware Pro. Im looking forward to getting over there and redemming myself in that contest. Its looking like the the waves are going to be pumping. I will be writing a blog in a couple days on the whats going down so check back soon mates. Yeah right!!!!!!!!!
