Alex Smith put on a show for the competitors and viewers alike in his Explorer Men final at the NSSA Nationals Final day this Saturday, June 27. Smith laid down massive rail carves and nearly ran away with the heat if it was not for an interference called early in the heat. He later dropped a 9.5 to climb to second where he would finish. Alex continued the momentum into the Air Show where he threw down a big air, which secured the second spot again. The Open Men final was a wave starved heat, but Alex pushed on punting a massive air reverse, but without a solid back up fell short as Kolohe Andino took the Governors Cup.
Other standouts on the final day were Koa Smith with a third place finish in Explorer Juniors and a strong showing in the Air Show as well. Koa attempted a front side back flip but was unable to pull the maneuver. Pat Curren was eliminated in the semi of his Open Boys division, but came back in the Explorer Menehune final putting up two solid scores and a forth place finish.
We saw strong performances from all the other Rip Curl team from around the US including Frank Curren, Shaun Burns, Colin Moran, Dorian Blanchard, Christian Miller, Johnny and Eddie Elles in their respective divisions.
