UC Irvine Reeve-Irvine Research Center

Posted at 02:00:00 AM

A couple weeks ago I met Dr. Suzy Kim at the Life Rolls On Surf Event in Malibu. She introduced herself and let me know that she worked at the UCI Christopher Reeve Center. She was just super outgoing and you could tell very athletic. Anyway we started talking and she asked if I wanted to come by the Research Center to meet and talk Dr. Hans Keirstead and Dr. Oswald Steward. When I first got hurt like a lot of people, you don't really know where to go or who to talk to. You're not sure what the next step is or even what kind of wheelchair you need. There are a lot of unknowns, but after getting home from Craig, asking questions to everybody and anybody, and really trying to learn I was told about a guy name Dr. Hans Keirstead. Basically that he worked along side Christopher Reeve and trying to find a cure for paralysis. Well, when I finally got a chance to talk to him he didn't disappoint. He was totally down to earth and actually sat down with me for an hour to explain how the spinal cord can be healed. I mean this guy could potentially make me walk again. Well, of course if I haven't already. :) It was an amazing day and am absolutely stoked. So after him explaining somethings we went up to Suzy's office and she just listened to a lot of the issues I've had since the crash and gave me a ton of good advice. One thing that is for sure next on the list. Buying a new wheelchair. The one I ordered was my first out of the hospital, but I need to get some lighter wheels and a chair that I fits me better. These things are about $6,000 each. Ouch! So tomorrow I have to go in for a CT Mylogram. It's a procedure that shoots some kind of metallic dye or something up into my spinal column. Once the dye starts going up it stops where the pinch is so they know exactly where to go in. They have to do before they can schedule surgery to take out the loose bone fragment that is pinning down on my nerve. I wish I didn't have to go under the knife, but I'll be so happy if that pain goes away. Unfortunately I have to be on 24hr. bed rest after the procedure so tomorrow with be uneventful. Although I think I'll finally be able to catch up on some email. Okay, well it's now Friday and I'm really tired. I'll let you all know how the CT Mylogram goes. Cheers! tara Never Give Up! www.tarallanesroadtorecovery.com
