Pink Mountaintops- Outside Love (Jagjaguwar Rec)
Indie rock sensations from Vancouver, BC, Pink Mountaintops return with their third offering. Though Stephan McBean is the chief songwriter and main force behind PM, there is a long list of accomplished musicians on this disc, many of whom, along with McBean, have been part of the more widely known Black Mountain band.
Self proclaimed as 'love and hate that reads like a Danielle Steele novel' and influenced by weddings in Montreal, Pink Floyd, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Bermuda Triangle and all sorts of other randomness, this is quite an unusual and distinct body of work.
Outside Love definitely has a soaring, epic, classic rock feel- occasionally sounding jangly, sometimes Beatles-esque, even hinting at a Cat Power sound on some other tracks. Since there are more musicians on this disc than I could name, there isn't two songs here that sound a like in anyway.
Somewhere between gospel, classic and psychedelic rock, Pink Mountaintops have a desperate, sometimes painful tone, emotionally draining and cathartic in its delivery. Far from the feel good record of the year but ideal for late night pondering. Ebullient and majestic, really.
