Shark Speed- Sea Sick Music (Self Released)
I've been quite impressed with the amount of above average releases coming out in 2009. Seems like the last couple years yielded a lot of mediocre discs, so much so that coming up with year end top ten lists was actually becoming difficult. But not even halfway through 2009 and I can already name 7 or 8 exceptional records, many destined to become classics (i.e. Transit, The Cold Beat, Chris Wollard, Living With Lions, etc).
Shark Speed are for certain to be one of the years finest as well. A collective writing process, these guys took 3 months to ink out their debut full length, the result being 9 tracks of jangly, danceable, hook laden indie rock that could draw parallels to Minus The Bear mixed with Burning Airlines.
Far from typical indie rock fare, Shark Speed open the disc with horns, later on use some electronica, and employ plenty of math rock dynamics coupled with charming melodies and lots of intricate drumming.
Excellent first effort from these Utah boys, and in the spirit of DIY ethics released by themselves. But it won't be long before a reputable label scoops these guys up- this is an incredible collection of music recommended for fans of American Football or Ra Ra Riot.
