Oceans- Nothing Collapses (Copper Lung Rec)
Debut release from these Chicago instrumental post rock wizards, bringing to mind plenty of other Chicago based outfits from ten years ago (e.g. Braid). Taking an approach not unlike Mogwai or Explosions In The Sky, Oceans weave the listener through gentle melodies, dynamic song structure and intricate song writing.
A swirling mass of melody and emotion, Oceans has no problem keeping the listener mesmerized despite the lack of vocals, laying out driving, soothing, ebullient tracks that build and erupt, push and pull.
Most people relegate instrumental music to merely background sounds at best, a CD to put in when you're vacuuming or doing dishes. However, Oceans is an anomaly in the world of instrumental rock, demanding your full attention in the way the instrumental track on the Texas Is The Reason LP captured all our hearts.
Quite beautiful, this could be very well be the new divine jewel of inspirational melancholy.
