UUVVWWZ- UUVVWWZ (Saddle Creek Rec)
Good luck pronouncing this one. Maybe one of the strangest band names ever and perhaps equally as bizarre music coming at us from indie rock super label Saddle Creek. Though the label has been home to some very unconventional and successful acts, past and present (Cursive, The Faint, Bright Eyes), it's pretty safe to safe UUVVWWZ is breaking new territory in the area of weirdness.
Located just down the street from Omaha in Lincoln, these Nebraskan's play a unique brand of avant rock and blues, with a female voice that shrieks and sings. While the music varies from psych pop to prog punk, bordering very nearly toward disarray at many points, it's frontwoman Teal Gardner's unusually colorful and articulate voice that really holds the listeners attention (think a more spazzed out Chan Marshall, i.e. Cat Power).
Putting their own spin on blues-y, noisey, indie rock with a hint of 60's psychedelic pop and traces of new wave this is a very unconventional listening experience. Unstable and on the cusp of all out dissonance, this somehow still retains an undeniable charm and radiates with manic, wild energy. This must be listened to repeatedly to be fully absorbed and recognized for its brilliance.
