We Were Promised Jetpacks- These Four Walls (Fat Cat Rec)
After creating a buzz just off a 3 song demo and a win at the battle of the bands at their school, Edinburgh's We Were Promised Jetpacks quickly gathered radio play on several stations in their part of the world, eventually attracting the attention of Fat Cat records.
Not a surprising thing at all considering this is excellent post punk layered in intense, emotive rhythms which manages to be driving, melodic, anthemic and seemingly on the cusp of exploding at any given moment. 'These Four Walls' is the musical equivalent of a stick of dynamite that has been lit and is slowly working its way toward imploding while a thunderstorm brews in the background.
Frontman Adam Thompson has no problems keeping up with the energy as he guides the listener through hypnotic, escalating highs as well as acoustic dominated numbers. The intensity is unpredictable, the songs build with noisey, soaring harmony that has a semblance of pop layered beneath the brooding, frenetic uproar. The music here is so good it would be a great instrumental disc; put a great vocalist over it and you have something very, very intriguing.
I really can't think of anything that resembles this, but I do hear influences from Muse and Bloc Party on various parts of 'These Four Walls', though I honestly feel this is a better version of either of those bands. At an average age of 21, We Were Promised Jetpacks are just getting started and what a fantastic starting point this is!
