Castevet- Summer Fences (Count Your Lucky Stars Rec)
I was pretty excited to get this cause I had already heard this band and knew they were amazing. Having grown up in the midwest I'm quite partial to the '90's midwest sound', i.e. Braid, Cap'n Jazz, The Promise Ring, etc. and Castevet have a sound cut from a similar cloth to all the greats of yesteryear.
Hailing from Chicago, these cats don't waste anytime pulling the listener in from the dreamy/atmospheric opening, quickly digging into their mesh of post-rock, math rock, and emotive post-hardcore. Managing to be both melodic yet aggressive, passive yet unrestrained, and intricate yet sparse, this disc will appeal to anyone with a penchant for harmony and jangly, quirky indie rock with detailed guitar work.
Musically, as Castevet paint a gorgeous landscape of angular melody and tuneful dynamics, this will bring to mind some of the classics like Texas Is The Reason, Minus The Bear or Mineral. Vocally it's a little more abrasive in a Small Brown Bike sort of way; seemingly an anomaly for the gruff singing over the pensive music, it actually works quite well.
An amazing record- highly recommended for fans of late 90's post-hardcore or anyone with an ear for lush instrumentation and engaging songwriting...
