Girl Loves Distortion- You Better Run, Your Highness (Etxe Records)
While our nations capital has never been short on amazing new bands, it seems like it's been awhile now since I've heard anything real groundbreaking come out of the area. I can recall a time when just about every other record I picked up stemmed from DC as it seemed more bands were coming out of the area than record labels could keep up with.
DC's Girl Loves Distortion take a cue from so many other great bands from their town and write songs inspired by and related to their city. With 3 singers, keyboards and electronics added to the guitars and drums, the band takes on a textured, unique and powerful sound. With their catchy basslines, 80's retro vocals and post-punk angle, it's all too easy to lump this into the 'DC Sound', i.e. moody, and emotive post-hardcore. And while there are some definite influences from their peers present, with their fuzzy and distorted guitars they sometimes come off reminiscent of the Pixies.
A warm, layered disc of precise instrumentation and catchy, melodic rockers, this is one of the most exciting bands to come out of the DC area in a long time. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys music from such labels as Dischord, De Soto or Slowdime.
