I thought I had seen it all in my 12+ years traveling the world in the Bmx industry. Last weekend in Tampa was a first for me, though. After a 3 day event ended at the fairgrounds (event was Gearfest), the promoter came out to a room full of contracted work and said, verbatim, 'I don't have any money, I can't pay anyone'.
The projected 10,000 people a day turned out to be less than 1000 total for all 3 days and said promoter came up about 80 grand short to pay all the hired help and the purse for the motorcycle contest. Telling a room full of Fmx, Bmx and motorcycle riders this news didn't go over very well; some of the work traveled cross country for the event and were owed 15 grand. People started to get visibly upset, cops were present and soon enough local newsreporters were onsite interviewing the riders.
Below are some pics from the Bmx portion of the event- The Dialed Action stunt team came all the way from State College, PA only to walk away unpaid and probably pursuing legal action as I write this...
