The Bomb- Speed Is Everything (No Idea Rec)
Wow. It doesn't get any better than this as far as an all star cast. Jeff Pezzati of Naked Raygun fronts The Bomb and musicians from The Methadones and Four Star Alarm back him up. As if that weren't enough, Jay Robbins turned the knobs on 'Speed Is Everything' and even does some back up vocals, as do punk icons Dan Yemin (Lifetime, Paint It Black) and Bob Nanna (Hey Mercedes, Braid, The City On Film).
From the first note, this is unrelenting and furious guitar driven post-punk, full of distortion and Pezzati's trademark 'woah-oh-ohs'. The songs occasionally slow down in tempo but the urgency and immediacy never ceases. It's emotive, powerful and melodic yet hard hitting- has all of the elements that made Naked Raygun a genre defining outfit.
Naked Raygun will always be one of the most noted and influential punk rock bands ever conceived. The mark they left on the world is immeasurable, and they aren't done yet (Pezzati does The Bomb in between Raygun reunions). In all honesty, this is just as good as Raygun- no joke.
This has successfully trumped everything I've heard this year, sits in my #1 spot as far as the best disc of 2009 (sorry, The Cold Beat). Add The Bomb to Pezzati's list of seminal bands, alongside Big Black and Raygun.
