Higher Giant- Al's Moustache (Black Number Rec)
I love it when hardcore celebrities start bands with one another. It's like hearing combinations of all your favorite bands in one super group. Sure, sometimes it's a huge letdown (Junkyard), but more often that not it ends up being pretty damn amazing (Rival Schools, Texas Is The Reason, Pinhead Gunpowder).
Higher Giant definitely fall into the latter category. With a previous roster of bands including Warzone, Paint It Black, Lifetime, Grey Area, Kid Dynamite, Good Riddance and Token Entry, Higher Giant probably have some serious expectations from the punk rock jury.
The verdict? Excellent melodic hardcore that's rough enough around the edges to avoid being pop music, but certainly isn't just hardcore in the plainest sense of the word. Driving, clean singing, catchy guitar riffs- fun music that will have you singing along on the second listen. Bouncy and anthemic, these guys have the melodic hardcore formula down to a science.
Though they've only recorded two EPs at this point, these guys have paid their dues and then some in the area of hardcore punk and this record plays like a well oiled machine. Meticulous, sharp songwriting, and instantly memorable this is quite possibly the most underrated band in the world of DIY punk.
