Cococoma- Things Are Not All Right (Goner Rec)
More greatness from Chicago, this time wife and husband garage punk (with an additional member) who have been at it since 2005, releasing a couple 7"'s and splits prior to a self- titled full length. It's a pretty straight forward formula; Lisa plays the hell out of her guitar, Bill pounds the crap out of his drums and together with bass player/ organ player Mike they play hook filled punk rock with a 1960's garage spirit.
Continuing on with the spazzed out, catchy melody of their debut LP, 'Things Are Not All Right' shows the band not slowing down their pace, and sharpening their songwriting skills with an overall better production. Equal parts garage punk, psyche pop, and plenty of punk rock nods, this disc moves by at a quick pace with amazing guitar work and hooks that never slow down. They even make an organ rock pretty hard- you don't see that very often.
The best thing about this disc is the songs never run together; with bands of this genre, often times the record can sound like one long song. Not with Cococoma; infact, each song brings to mind different punk bands from yesteryear, almost like a time line of all your favorite punk bands. I hear influences from the Ramones and The Clash, then later on in the disc more contemporary bands like The Mr. T Experience or The Rip Offs. ]
Amazingly full sounding for a 3 piece, this is pure ear candy, instantly likeable, timeless in its delivery. Seriouly great foot tappin', head bobbin', guitar hook filled punk amazingness here.
