Spiral Stairs- The Real Feel (Matador Rec)
Spiral Stairs is Pavement's Scott Kannberg, this being his first proper disc with the aid of collaborators from bands like Broken Social Scene, The Posies, and Preston School of Industry (Kannberg's other post- Pavement band). Self-described as “has a vibe similar to classic 70’s albums by Fleetwood Mac (Then Play On), Captain Beefhart (Safe As Milk), and guitar god Richard Thompson, not to mention Aussie psych rock icons Died Pretty'.
While I'm not sure how accurate that description is, but it sure is interesting and a great listen. After a 5 year absence from recording, Kannberg returns with songs about his complicated love life (often times tongue in cheek), and keeps his trademark guitar licks intact with some hints at blues and 70's rock to his melancholic, sage like songs. It has a dark theme to it, nearing cathartic at points, and is largely buried in classic rock guitars, with Kannberg's haunting voice leading the way.
Self- described as the 'best album he's ever made', this is an accomplished and eclectic lesson in indie rock history, easily being Kannbergs most accomplished work since the almight Pavement. Look for Pavement to reunite soon and Kannberg to take Spiral Stairs all over the world as well.
