No Friends- No Friends (No Idea)
One of the best things about No Idea is the label has no set definitive sound. While most labels stay within the confines of a certain genre, this longtime Gainesville, Florida institution is as likely to put out metal (Holy Mountain) as they are country-esque (Whiskey & Co.) and just about anywhere in between.
No Friends might be a new twist for the No Idea camp though. Consisting of members from bands like New Mexican Disaster Squad, Municipal Waste, Virgins and Gatorface, No Friends debut disc is a lot like going back in time to the mid 80's, when band like Gorilla Biscuits and The Adolescents ruled the hardcore scene.
Taking nods at youth crew straight edge style hardcore and adding influences like D.R.I and S.O.D, this is an incredible collection of melodic, hard hitting hardcore that takes old school spirit and adds a modern day feel. It's simultaneously frenetic, up front, and moves at a blistering pace with urgency.
Successfully merging the style bands like Battery and Undertow made famous with icons like The Damned or Minor Threat, this remains both brutal and melodic, with great finger pointing, breakdown style hardcore. The songs are quick blasts of tuneful urgency, the sort of hardcore that leaves your fist pumping and lungs shouting.
If you're like me and you've found yourself in heated arguments about which of Dag Nasty's 3 different singers were the best or if the Gorilla Biscuits record would have been better if Walter sang instead of CIV, this is right up your alley.
