Six Finger Satellite- A Good Year For Hardness (Anchor Brain Rec)
Synth post-punks from Providence who have been banging away for nearly two decades (with a few year hiatus) return with their 7th full length, slated for release on October 20. Having released 'Half Control' last year (which was recorded in 2001 but shelved), Six Finger Satellite have stepped back into the spotlight like not a day has passed.
Always challenging the status quo for music, 'A Good Year For Hardness' moves past conventional ideas of how music should sound, a way of approaching music that garnered these guys a huge following in their prime and is keeping old fans around as well as collecting new ones.
Occasionally heavy on the bass, sometimes groovy but at all times noisy with underlying melodic hooks, this is bizarre art rock that you could dance to, has a lot of start and stop rhythms, plenty of synth madness and overall has a spacey, science fiction like sonic madness to it. It's hypnotic and jagged with interesting guitar riffs and occasionally an 80's pop weirdness feel to it, but maintains its own identity all the way through. Very few bands have ever sounded like this- no doubt part of Six Finger Satellite's charm and appeal.
A band that few could comprehend in the mid to late 90's but who developed a cult like following, these guys stepped right back into their brand of oddness and electronic post punk without missing a beat, maybe even doing it better than ever...
