El Perro Del Mar- Love Is Not Pop (The Control Group Rec)
El Perro Del Mar (The Dog From The Sea in spanish) is Sweden's Sarah Assbring's musical vehicle who is now on her third full length 'Love Is Pop', slated for release in the U.S. on October 20th. Though El Perro Del Mar was initially intended to be some recorded music on CD-R form, it didn't take long to turn into worldwide acclaim as Assbring's unique brand of introspective and delicate arrangements have struck a chord with fans worldwide.
Inspired by a Lou Reed song ('Heavenly Arms'), 'Love Is Not Pop' unfolds like a musical diary of Armstrong's last couple years, as the entire disc is love songs or in Armstrong's words 'the dream of love in a dirty world'. Having spent time in both New York and Paris and having experiences with love in both cities, those periods leave an indelible mark on this record (thus the title of the disc).
A much darker effort this time around, Assbring joins forces with producer Rasmuss Hagg who trades in his usual electronica for guitars and drums, the end result being a body of dreamy, atmospheric, delicately hushed gems. It's a mysterious, haunting collection of minimalist beauty, with traces of electronica, and a lot of intimate and abstract influences. Possessing a very lush, organic feel, 'Love Is Not Pop' is gorgeous collection of surreal like music- easy on the ears, absorbed into the senses with a warm, fuzzy feeling despite the sometimes melancholic subject matter.
