Victor! Fix The Sun- Person Place Or Thing (Friction Rec)
Michigan seems to be a hot spot for indie rock goodness lately, this year alone spawning a handful of releases from up and coming bands, and the Count Your Lucky Stars label giving us at least five great discs from the Michigan area. Following up their debut LP ('Retractable Claws'), Grand Rapids rockers Victor! Fix The Sun deliver their sophomore effort- 'Person Place Or Thing' on October 20.
Putting a finely tuned polish on post-hardcore, these guys bury melody under brash songs with vocals that sound forthright, tense and energetic. Somewhere between noisy hardcore and angular, mathy dynamics, this is a robust disc of heavy riffage and post-punk frenzy with throaty singing. Finding the elusive balance between melody and driving, forceful rock , Victor! Fix The Sun successfully mesh franticness with quieter meandering moments, occasionally taking nods at classic rock even.
On one hand it's a wild, screamy, emotive mess of hardcore/punk. On the other, it finds a groove among catchy rhythms and soothing, atmospheric bit and pieces. Combining these elments, these guys make one of the best discs of the year, eclectic and beaming with radiance and skilled songwriting.
Only 500 of these pressed (250 on amber, 250 on maroon) and each record comes with a free download card- you really can't go wrong here.
