Brilliant Colors- Introducing (Slumberland Records)
Front woman Jess Scott began Brilliant Colors in 2007 with her bedroom recordings but had some hard times staffing the rest of the band, finally filling the spots with east coast transplants, one of which tours with The Slits. After two sold out, worldly praised singles, the Brilliant Colors debut full length comes highly anticipated, as the San Franciso women are making big waves in the world of underground pop music.
'Introducing' gives the listener ten songs of jangly, catchy, finely tuned lo-fi indie rock. Working with a pop template, Brilliant Colors deliver a playful batch of wistful and echoey songs with buzzing guitars and a retro late 70s/early 80s feel matched with punk spirited roots. Not unlike a more punk version of The Shop Assistants and with melodies that would make Joey Ramone proud, these tracks are dripping with ear candy sweetness, nearly impossible not to find addictive.
At just 24 minutes, this is a brief jaunt into a world of perfectly crafted pop gems, dreamy/fuzzy melodies and driving, crunchy rhythms that occasionally brings to mind past greats like Blondie or The Runaways but maintains a modern feel. In a perfect world, this is what pop music would sound like in 2009. And like any great disc, it leaves you wanting more.
