Peter Squires- Woe Is Me
It's becoming pretty apparent to me that a lot of great music is being recorded in bedrooms these days. Gone are the days of having to record music with an engineer in a studio, turning dozens of knobs, needing a handful of people standing around, etc. Turns out with the right sources and talent you can make your own music barely leaving the confines of your bed now.
Peter Squires is living proof of that. This Brooklyn based songwriter recorded this disc where he sleeps, going back to basics with his stripped down approach to folky, sparse songs with little percussion and a minimalist approach. What he lacks in volume he makes up for with sincere, intelligent songwriting that draws parallels to Kimya Dawson or Luke Temple, while taking on the same emotive heart tugging that legends like Morrissey or The Cure perfected.
Baring his soul with an amount of forthrightness very rarely seen, 'Woe Is Me' comes off as a journey into the dark recesses of one man's experience with heartbreak, sorrow, broken dreams, tears and even laughs. This type of confessional songwriting often walks a fine line between being articulate and inspiring versus self-pitying and incessant whining, though Squires stories falls firmly with the former, his songs radiating with a sad beauty while being playful and even comical. In a perfect world Peter Squires would replace John Mayer or Jack Johnson the FM dial.
Squires is giving away this disc free at his site (link is below).
