Upon arrival in Mobile last week we had to set up the ramps on grass. Usually a feat not even attempted by most, we didn't have a choice and had to make it work. Armed with 52 sheets of plywood to make runways, myself and Jeremy Fanberg set up a box jump, quarterpipe and sub box by ourselves, piecing together plywood to get to and from the ramps, then cutting strips of wood to lay underneath the plywood and screw in so they wouldn't move. It took the better part of two days to do. And one of the those days it was raining.
About 4 days into the shows it was becoming apparent this wasn't working; the plywood was rising and bending from the rain, we couldn't get any speed pedaling on it, and the flatlander was having so much trouble even with basic tricks on the surface. So it was mentioned to us to MOVE THE ENTIRE SET UP ELSEWHERE. It seemed like a good idea at the time; better surface, bigger crowds, etc. After hours of red tape to go through to get this approval the idea seemed less and less appealing to us, and after we pretty much all resigned ourselves from any interest in moving the ramps we were told to do it.
Fast forward four hours of tear down and set up and we have ramps moved about two hundred feet away on asphalt. It was a lot of work, but in the end worth it. Here are pics of the original set up on grass.
