Daisy McCrackin- The Rodeo Ground EP (Aeronaut Rec)
Let's be honest, how often does the film star turned musician route really pan out? Legions of celebrity actors have tried their hand in the music industry, though few managed to do anything but embarrass themselves. Sure, people like Patrick Swayze and Eddie Murphy had #1 songs decades ago, but how many legimate actors made the transition to musician with any significant duration?
Then there's the multi-faceted Daisy McCrackin- a young woman who takes her talent in a new direction and graces us with her debut EP this past November. Formerly a successful actress (McCrackin was in '3000 Miles To Graceland', 'Halloween: Ressurrection' among other movies and a handful of TV shows as well), after playing music most of her life to mostly herself or others around the campfire, this rising star has finally opened the world up to the songs that have running around the recesses of her mind for years.
A six song EP, 'Rodeo Grounds' pay homage to the Topango Community Grounds McCrackin resided in, where she found her inspiration to move towards music as her true passion. The end result is a brief venture into a world of stripped down, acoustic gems that sit comfortably somewhere between country and folk that comes off as both haunting and sunny, desolate and hopeful. McCrackin's voice is flawless as she relays stories about love gone awry, complemented by a banjo, according, and percussion that gives this a very modern americana feel.
McCrackin played her first show in 2006 and was cited as an 'instant rock star' in LA weekly. In a time when busy electronic music has become the norm, it's refreshing to hear something as seemingly straightforward and back to basics as McCrackin. Genuine and heartfelt, it's pretty safe to say that whatever this young woman wants to accomplish with her guitar is within reach.
