Utah....you can't skate here.
In classic Utahian fashion, the Salt Lake City Health Department has banned skate ramps in backyards. Not only is Utah the home of such awesome inventions as 3.2 beer and no Halloween on Sundays but they are now the proud owners of the "you can't skate in your own backyard or we'll fine you" law. Is it a coincidence that this law has been imposed after the main stream arena skatefest, aka The Dew Tour, came to town and stoked the hearts and souls of the morroni population? I think not, Heaven forbid any Salt Lake child get inspired by the Dew Tour and decide to build a ramp in their back yard and get all rad and stuff. Now in all fairness the law is on the books under the guise of "noise pollution" but I am pretty sure giggling kids jumping on trampolines or splashing around in pools in their plastic water wings make some pretty heavy noise pollution.
For the love of God, save me from extinction......
I'm just sayin, we had a skate ramp in our backyard growing up and instead of my brother and his friends sniffing glue in the park they skated that thing everyday, the glue sniffing came later. And yeah maybe the neighbors weren't that stoked on it but then again they weren't that stoked on anything unless it revolved around polo ponies or yachting. I have digressed yet again.....point being, go to http://www.slcminiramp.com and sign the online petition and let private property be just that and let neighbors be neighbors and figure it out for themselves. That's all for now......t
*Keep in mind that Utah has a slew of great parks where you can be as noisy as you like and that you can learn about in detail from the lovely Brian Baade at skateutah.com
*for those of you who want to see the actual law it looks like this:
"4.5.21. Sporting Ramps. No person shall build or use nor shal any person cause, allow, or permit anyone to build or allow anyone to use any skateboard, roller blade, bicycle, or snowboard ramp or half-pipe or similar configuration within 800 feet of a dwelling, except within facilities that have been designated for such use by government entity."
